ANNUAL CATHOLIC BEE COMPETITION
Annually the Knights of Columbus Long Green Valley Council sponsors a regional Catholic Bee. During Catholic Schools Week, St. John School held its own bee to determine which of its third, fourth and fifth graders would earn a spot in the regional. Alaina Kerins (fifth grade) was the 1st place winner. The 2nd place winner was third grader Emma Hecht and the 3rd place winner was fourth grader Olivia DiCocco. These ladies competed against their entire grade to earn one of the 18 spots in the Jan. 31 competition. Questions ranged from “How did Genesis describe Noah’s relationship to God?” to “What are palms symbolic of on Palm Sunday?”
These same students represented their school in the regional Catholic Bee competition which is also sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Catholic schools and parishes from around the area sent their best and brightest to see who knew the most facts about the Catholic faith. All three SJE students made it to the final eight, and Emma Hecht won the whole competition! Not only did she win the top student prize, but she also won a $100 for the school!
ANNUAL NOTRE DAME PREPARATORY EGG DROP COMPETITION
Twelve 7th & 8th grade girls competed in NDP’s 9th annual Egg Drop competition on February 4, 2017. The girls were split into three teams of four. Each team designed and built a capsule that could protect 2 large eggs from being broken when dropped from a specified height. Two of our three teams had both their eggs survived two drops! The girls also participated in an engineering challenge which consisted of building a bridge from paper cups and popsicle sticks that could
support the weight of a golf ball.
ANNUAL SCHOLYMPICS COMPETITION AT THE INSTITUTE OF NOTRE DAME
SJE was among twelve teams from seven different elementary schools to participate in this year's Scholympics at the Institute of Notre Dame High School on March 18, 2017. Upon arrival the seventh grade girls took an individual written test. Afterwards, their scores were added together for a team score. The top nine teams proceeded to the final three rounds.
SJE's Team 1 (comprised of Alyssa Kopp, Laken Heeter, and Meredith Weitz) and Team 2 (comprised of Lily Snouffer, Stefania Lumaro and Emma Edwards) made it to the finals which were run in an “It’s Academic” style.Team 2 made it to the championship round in which they tied for second place and ultimately won second place by knowing the answer to the tie-breaking question.
